In Search of Comfort
I’m a big fan of comfort sewing. The kind of stuff you are drawn to when you just want to sew. Maybe the world is a bit too much? Or you had a pretty crappy day? Or you don’t want anything high stakes in your sewing? Regardless of the reason, sometimes you need more than easy. You need the sewing equivalent of a bowl of ice cream (or a bag of chips) and a rewatch of When Harry Met Sally.
For me, one of the blocks or techniques I am drawn to in those circumstances is a simple improv curve. Okay, it can be a bit more complex too, but it usually is simple. Back in January things were busy and the world was getting me down so I decided to play with some curves and a colour combo I’d never sewed with before. The colours are inspired by a winter sunrise here on the Prairies. There’s nothing like it. There was no intention of making a quilt, instead, I just needed some time to sew with obligation with fabric that made me smile. So that’s what I did. And when I ran out of the fabric I started with I went shopping and, only then, committed to making a quilt.
Fast forward to March when my dominant hand was in a cast and the only sewing I could do was quilt top assembly from blocks already made. Enter a king sized quilt waiting to be quilted.
Do I feel better? Maybe not on a daily basis, but making all 288 blocks helped me while I was doing it. And making the quilt top made me smile through the pain. So yeah, comfort sewing for the win.
