How Small is Too Small?

One of the most frequent questions I am asked is just how small of a scrap do I keep?

The short answer is that I keep anything that can still be sewn and seen.

If you keep a 1/4" seam allowance and want to still see something after you've sewn it, then that means I am keeping, and using, scraps as small as 3/4".

The long answer is that I do not measure, I am only eyeballing the scrap. And one day I might throw out that 1" square and the next day keep twenty of them. That fickleness is fine by me. It all depends on the mood you are in. Do the scraps feel overwhelming that day? Maybe life is overwhelming that day and the scraps just feel like one more thing or they are the best thing. The influence of your moods on your craft is understandable. Just as the influence of your craft on your moods. So today I might be excited to add that little periwinkle scrap into another crumb block or I might let it fall to the floor only to be vacuumed up.

Both are right answers.
