First Law of Physics

A body in motion will stay in motion and a body at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by an external force.

Also known as the Law of Inertia.

We've been lecturing the kids about this during the entire pandemic. It's easy to lay around and do nothing. It's even easier to keep doing this. Motivation, however, is often not enough of an external force.

What do you sew when you know sewing will make you feel better but you are struggling to find the motivation? For me, that is often those gateway blocks: half square triangles. Or it might be crumb blocks, snowballs, log cabins, or simple curves. Really, it's about sewing that requires no thought.

The whole idea of going through the motions is not a bad thing in this case! That is because creativity begets creativity. If you are stuck, unmotivated, or just plain stressed then moving is important. The external force doesn't have to be a big thing. In quilting terms that means now is not the time to pull out that complicated paper piecing project or your bucket list Baltimore Album. Simply sewing strips together works. Simple sewing, period, to break the inertia.
